Day 01 Arrival Lhasa and acclimatization
Welcome to Tibet at Gonggar Airport! Lhasa, the capital of China's Tibet Autonomous Region, has a history of more than 1,300 years. It is the political, economic, cultural and transport center of the region. Lhasa covers an area of close to 30,000 square km. It has a downtown of 544 square km and a population of 400,000; 140,000 of its people live in the downtown area. Lhasa is home to the Tibetan, Han, and Hui peoples, as well as many other ethnic groups, but the Tibetan ethnic group makes up 87 percent of the total population.
Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the hotel. Here, air is extremely pure and the sky is deep blue. This day would be kept for your acclimatization. It is advisable to drink plenty of water and have a good sleep for next day’s program.
Day 02 Lhasa sightseeing [B]
Visit Potala Palace and Jokang Monastery today, then walk on the Barkhor Street surrounding Jokhang, a big free market with its prolific stalls for selling local specialties.
Day 03 Lhasa sightseeing [B]
Visit Drepung Monastery for the whole morning, later after lunch, visit Sera monastery. We can do the Sera Kora walk of about 1 hr and then catch the famous debate session (if the debate session is in process) of the monks before returning back to Lhasa.
Day 04 Lhasa/Yamdrok Yumtso/Gyantse, 300km [B]
Drive to Gyantse, the famous historical city in Tibet, along the Kyichu River. On the Ganba La (4,796 m) have a fantastic view of the holy lake of Yamdrok Yumtso (4441 m).
Gyantse, some 200km southwest of Lhasa, is one of the least Chinese-influenced towns in Tibet and is worth a visit for this reason alone. Gyantse is famous for its wool carpets and palkhor choide chorten.
Visit Palkhor Monastery and Kumbum Stupa.
Later, take a short hike to Gyantse Dzong. There are amazing views of Gyantse, the monastery compound at the end of town and the surrounding Nyang-chu valley.
Day 05 Gyantse/Shigatse, 90 km / Lhatse 150 km [B]
In the
morning, drive to
Shigatse, which is the second largest city in Tibet and also the
hometown of Panchen Lama.
Visit
Tashilumpu Monastery, the main attraction of Shigatse city and its
free market.
Afterwards continue drive to Lhatse, upon arrival, visit Xiqin Hot Springs (4010 m), one may enjoy some easy hiking in this area. It is said lots of illness can be cured by taking a bath in the hot spring. It is the perfect place for a relaxed solitary time. Don't forget to wash up your face and hands with the spring water as it contains medicinal values or you may have a dip there (self-paid).
Day 06 Lhatse/Old Tingri/Shigatse [B]
In the morning drive to Old Tingri, there you could have view the Mt. Everest from a distance, then drive back to Shigatse, visit Sakya Monastery en route.
It is recommended to visit Xegar only if you are interested to visit EBC, otherwise there is no sightseeing place in Xegar.
Day 07 Shigatse/Lhasa [B]
In the morning, drive back to Lhasa along Yalung Tsangpo River, upon arrival, the free time at your disposal.
Day 08 Leave Tibet [B]
In time, transfer to
the airport/train station for your onward journey to the next destination
