17 Nights/18 Trekking To  Kangshung Face Of Mt. Everest

Day 01  Arrival Lhasa and acclimatization
Welcome to Tibet at Gonggar Airport! Lhasa, the capital of China's Tibet Autonomous Region, has a history of more than 1,300 years. It is the political, economic, cultural and transport center of the region. Lhasa covers an area of close to 30,000 square km. It has a downtown of 544 square km and a population of 400,000; 140,000 of its people live in the downtown area. Lhasa is home to the Tibetan, Han, and Hui peoples, as well as many other ethnic groups, but the Tibetan ethnic group makes up 87 percent of the total population.
Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the hotel. Here, air is extremely pure and the sky is deep blue. This day would be kept for your acclimatization. It is advisable to drink plenty of water and have a good sleep for next day’s program. 

Day 02  Lhasa sightseeing [B]
Visit
Potala Palace and Jokang Monastery today, then walk on the Barkhor street surrounding Jokhang, a big free market with its prolific stalls for selling local specialties.

Day 03  Lhasa sightseeing [B]
Visit Drepung Monastery for the whole morning, later after lunch, visit Sera monastery.  We can do the Sera Kora walk of about 1 hr and then catch the famous debate session (if the debate session is in process) of the monks before returning back to Lhasa.
 

Day 04 Lhasa/Gyantse/Shigatse, 390km [B]
Drive to Gyantse, the famous historical city in Tibet, along the
Kyichu River. On the Ganba La (4,796 m) have a fantastic view of the holy lake of Yamdrok Yumtso (4441 m). Visit Gyantse Dzong, Pelkor Monastery and Kumbum Stupa. Then continue to drive to get to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet and also the hometown of Panchen Lama.
Visit Palkhor Monastery and Kumbum Stupa.

Day 05 Shigatse/Shegar (4390m) [B]
Morning continue driving to Shegar via
Gyatsola Mountain Pass (5220m). It takes 6-7 hours to get there covering 310 km. The road is bumpy and dusty. Time permitting, visit Sakya Monastery (4.280 m) enroute. Today, you can appreciate the evening scenery of Mt. Everest. 

Day 06 Shegar/Kharta [B]
Drive to Kharta today. It is free day for packing and hiring yaks for next few days trekking.

 Day 07 Kharta-Yueba, 2.5 hrs. Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
From Kharta, cross the bridge over the Lang Chu, then follow the left (north) bank of the crystal-clear Kharta Chu westward. This beautiful, inhabited valley has many villages and good camp sites. Walk past Yulok on the south bank (1.25 hours) and Yulong before reaching Yueba (2.5 hours from Kharta) on the south bank by a bridge.  

Day 08 Yueba-Base of Langma La, 6 hrs. Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
Continue west along the Kharta Valley on a tractor track past Yarbu, a village near the entrance of a side valley that trends south (1.25 hours). 45 minutes beyond the Shao La turnoff is the large village of Lhundrubling. Go through the village to walk up to the top of a ridge (1.25 hours) that constitutes the east wall of the valley to walk up to the Langma La. Descend a short distance to the river, cross it and than walk up the other side. Follow this uninhabited side valley southwestward for 2 hours to the top of another ridge. Walk through a short gorge to a small grassy area with large boulders. Under a couple of these are makeshift cave shelters (45 minutes). Mountains with snow and ice are all around. The Langma La is a rocky cliff with sheer sides. 

Day 09 Base of Langma La-Cave, 5.25 hrs. Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
This difficult day crosses the steep, three-tiered Langma La Pass. If weather is clear, you may view Mt. Makalu (8,463) and other high mountains. 

Day 10 Cave-Pethang, 4 hrs. Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
Cave to Pethang (4-hours). Heading down the valley from the cave to a long narrow trail 300m form the bottom of the Karma Valley, after crossing the Karma Valley, the path leads to Karma chu to Pethang. 

Day 11 Pethang-Pethang Ringmo, 5.5 hrs. Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
Go west up the Karma Valley by following the river’s left (north) bank. Moraines and landslides may make your journey difficult. Reach the Kangshung Face base camp (5000 m) in 3 hours. This large, grassy area with stunning views of Mt. Everest (8848 m) and Lhotse (8516 m) to the left (south) is known as Pethang Ringmo. It is possible to walk further along the glacier to the west by climbing up a 5990 m ridge (2.5 hours to ascend 1000 m). From here, Mt. Everest is only 5 km away, and to the southeast is a striking amphitheater of peaks dominated by Lhotse. Makalu rises dramatically farther to the southeast. Between Lhotse and Makalu, on the left along the Nepal-Tibet border, is the conical peak of Pethangtse (6724 m). 

Day 12 Pethang Ringmo-Pethang, 4 hrs. Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
Return to Pethang. 

Day 13 Pethang-Sharlung, 5.5 hrs. Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
Walk back up to a point just below the cave called Tangshum (2.5 hours). Turn rightwards along a ridge that overlooks the river valley, extends to the northeast and the Chok La. Continue to the end of the ridge to its end and descend for a short distance to another cave, the Sharlung, situated next to an emerald lake.
 

Day 14 Sharlung-Sharo, 4.75 hours Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
From Sharlung, turn north and cross two ridges to reach a wooden valley. The peaks of Makalu are directly opposite by viewing from the camp site, and at the foot of the pass, on the left, is a cave called Sharo. 

Day 15 Sharo-Yueba, 6 hours Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
From the cave to the Shao La Pass (5030 m) is an easy 2 hours ascent. Descend northward to an open area next to the lake. The trail continues north to the Kharta Valley at Yarbu. Turn right (east) along the right bank of the Kharta River to head back to Yueba. 

Day 16 Yueba-Kharta-Rongbuk Overnight in Tented Camps [B+L+D]
Walk east to Kharta (2.25 hours), and drive to Rongbuk monastery (5,200m), which is the highest monastery in the world. It will take 6- hours to reach Rongbuk to view the North face of the Mt Everest (8,848 m). 

Day 17 Rongbuk/Zhangmu, 260 km [B]
Drive early morning to Zhangmu passing through the 5,000 m high Nyalmo Tong La, which is decorated with multicolored prayer flags fluttering in the wind. With clear view the Shisha Pangma high over 8,000 m (Mt. Everest) appears on one side and on the other side the enormous Gaurisankar ranges stretch forward in the distance. Drive over the Thang-La Pass (5214 m) to Nyalam. Afterwards visit the meditation cave of Milarepa. Milarepa, the yogi, has played an important role in the religious life of Tibet and his teachings still influence the people everywhere. Along the zigzag road we drive down Nyalam (3.600 m) gradually and leave the landscape of the high plateau behind us and see the Himalayas covered in the sea of clouds before vreaching Zhangmu. Zhangmu is one of the most busiest town in Tibet being a border town and a trade route between India / Nepal and Tibet.  

Day 18 Zhangmu/Kathmandu [B]    
After completing the China Immigration and China Customs formalities, drive down to the other side of Friendship Bridge. Your Tibetan Vehicle will leave you on the Tibet Side of Friendship Bridge and then you’ll cross the bridge on foot before coming across the Nepal Immigration Post where our border handling agent will be waiting for you to guide you towards your vehicle for Kathmandu. From Friendship Bridge to Kathmandu, the distance is about 95 km but due to landslides in between, the distance could be longer so kindly be prepared for those unexpected extra hours. Our vehicle will drop you at your pre-booked hotel in Kathmandu or at the airport for your onward journey.
